@Mention System
CollaborationThe @mention system in Deaku lets you reference teammates, Canvases, media, and Projects directly inside your written text. Mentions keep conversations connected to the work - click a mentioned asset and it opens instantly, right from the message.
Where you can use @mentions
Mentions work across six areas of Deaku:
- Chat — in channel and direct message inputs
- Community — in community chat messages
- Canvases — in canvas comments and shared editor notes
- Project Notes — in project note threads and replies
- Video and image reviews - in review comments, to tag workspace members
- Deaku Assistant — when asking the AI a question, to give it context from a specific asset
How to trigger the mention menu
Type @ anywhere in a supported input. The mention menu appears above the input field immediately (or below it, if there isn't room above).
You can:
- Browse by category — the default view shows all four category headers (Users, Canvases, Media, Projects) with recent items below
- Search across everything — start typing after the @ and the menu searches all categories at once, showing up to 5 results per category
- Drill into a category — click a category header (or press the right arrow key) to see more items of that type (up to 20), then use the back button or left arrow to return
What you can mention
Users
Mentions a workspace member by name. In chat, this sends them a notification. While you type, user mention chips appear in amber/yellow to stand out from the message text.
Canvases
Links a Canvas document. Canvases are shown with a document icon. Clicking its card in a sent message opens the canvas in a popup.
Media
Links a video or image from your workspace media library. Media mentions show a thumbnail if one is available. Clicking its card in a sent message opens the video or image review view.
Projects
Links a project from your workspace. Project mentions use a grid icon. Clicking its card in a sent message navigates to that project.
Keyboard navigation
While the mention menu is open:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| ↑ / ↓ | Move through items |
| → | Drill into the highlighted category |
| ← | Go back to the default category view |
| Enter or Tab | Select the highlighted item |
| Escape | Close the menu |
How mentions appear in messages
Once you select an item, it becomes a styled mention chip inline in your message:
- User mentions — amber/yellow chip with a person icon
- Asset mentions (Canvases, Media, Projects) — grey chip with the relevant icon
To remove a chip before sending, press Backspace when the cursor is immediately after it.
Clicking a mention in a received message
In a sent chat message, a mention of you is highlighted in amber, mentions of other people in grey, and asset mentions in blue. When you mention a canvas, media or project, a card for it is also attached to the message - click the card to open it:
- Canvas mentions — opens the canvas in a popup overlay
- Media mentions — opens the video or image review view
- Project mentions — navigates to the project
- User mentions — displayed as a styled chip (non-clickable)
Mentions in the Deaku Assistant
When chatting with the Deaku Assistant, @mentions give the AI direct context about a specific asset. Mentions appear as chips inline in your message, just like in chat. To remove one, press Backspace when the cursor is immediately after it.
The Assistant uses the content of mentioned assets — Canvas text, video metadata, project details — to give you a more precise, relevant response.
Notifications
Mentioning a user in Chat or Project Notes sends them an in-app notification. They see who mentioned them and in which conversation. Notification preferences can be managed in Settings → Notifications.
